Demand for UK university places are set for a dramatic rise over the next decade. It is estimated that 300,00 students will have to be accommodated by the higher education sector by 2030.
There are a number of factors that have influenced this figure. One of theme being,by 2030 the number of 18 year olds will rise. As a result there will be 50,000 students demanding university places.
Furthermore 350,000 new spaces will need to be created to maintain the current participation rate.
With more students heading to University and the figure growing, questions are being asked on how the current debt burden on students will be managed in the future.
Speaking to the BBC Bahram Bekhradnia, president of Hepi (Higher Education Policy Institute), argued the current system is unsustainable. Adding that with under the current financial model uncapped student recruitment would be difficult to continue. Bekhradnia forsees a reintroduction of a cap on student numbers.
