Compare Student Rooms guide to Amsterdam on a budget
Amsterdam is one of Europe’s most accessible and impressive cities. Picturesque canals, amazing architecture and authentic cuisine are just a few of the attractions to this incredible city. However, if you find yourself in the wrong areas like many first-time travellers, you can end up forking out a lot more than you initially planned. That’s why at Compare Student Rooms, we’re going to be your know-how. Your free, handy little guide to help maximise your Amsterdam experience with a student budget in mind.
Cruise the Canals
Arguably Amsterdam’s most famous attraction and certainly what comes to mind when you think of the city, are the splendid canals. Day or night, dawn or dusk, walking the canals are completely free and are perfect for soaking up the vibrant atmosphere of the area. If you are willing to spend a bit of money or just want to see more of Amsterdam in less time, a bike is around 10 euros to rent and allows you to visit all the sites that you could possibly want to see in much less time.
Floating Flower Market
Another priceless (literally) attraction to visit in Amsterdam is the floating flower market. Situated on the Singel Canal, not only is the experience of a floating market incredible in itself, but the high variety of quantity and quality of flowers on show is really impressive and worth a picture or two!
The Heineken Experience
No Amsterdam experience is complete without the ‘Heineken Experience’, right? If you are new to the Amsterdam scene, this should be right at the top of your list. Visit the factory where the famous beer started and immerse yourself into its rich and extremely interesting history. Learn how to pour a pint (a life-skill which can go a long way, trust me!) and after all that, you even get a few complimentary beers on the rooftop bar, perfect!
On the subject of beer, if the Heineken Experience has got you pumped and ready to hit the town but you don’t know where to start, fear not! We have compiled a list of affordable bars where the low prices don’t compromise the level of quality.
Café the Minds – A rock/punk music bar that is open late with cheap beer and a relaxed but lively atmosphere.
Overtoom 301 – Another great place for cheap beer and if you are in Amsterdam on a Tuesday night, make sure you are there for Ping Pong Night!
Kriterion – A smaller, quaint cinema complex that is known not just for its great movie selections but its relaxed bar environment which you
can enjoy before or after the movie. A very authentic Amsterdam experience!
Roest – Described as a city beach during summer and a lively place t o be the rest of the year. Don’t miss out on this unique bar situated in a red-brick converted industrial building!
