Coming to Uni in Newcastle? Here is Compare Student Rooms top 5 things to do when you arrive!

One of the North’s biggest cities, Newcastle as you may already know is famous for its nightlife and the Geordie drinking culture. These are things that we have covered in previous blogs such as 5 Best Nights Out in Newcastle (link?) and 5 Best Bars (link?). Despite being focal to the north-east culture, there is still much, much more to do in and around the incredible city of Newcastle. From a stunning coastline to a vibrant city centre with football and its heart, strap in as we take you on a tour of 5 things to see and do in this great city…

Quayside

First on our list is the stunning Quayside with a huge array of attractions and photo spots. The Quayside refers to the area around the River Tyne close to the Tyne Bridge and Millennium Bridge and is what you predominantly see in most of Newcastle’s iconic pictures. Not only is it home to great coffee shops, restaurants and even better views but also the world famous Sage Gateshead and The Baltic. The Sage is the unmissable dome building home to musical concerts and The Baltic is Newcastle’s huge contemporary art museum. With local markets, City Games and much, much more, it all happens down at the Quayside!

Tynemouth

Taking a short trip to Newcastle’s coast is a great thing to do no matter the time of year. On the off chance that we do have some decent summer weather, Tynemouth beach is flooded with sunbathers and surfers who refresh with some freshly caught fish and chips and ice cream. However, the beach is a top visit all year round with dog-walkers, and a personal favourite of mine in the winter. There is nothing that beats a fresh beach walk followed by a beachside hot chocolate in the cosy Crusoe’s café!

St James’ Park

Returning back to the centre of the city, we find ourselves at the heart of the people – at St. James’ Park. This 52,000 capacity football stadium is one of the biggest in Europe and completely dominates the skyline. Although tickets to the matches are often expensive and quite difficult to get a hold of, the atmosphere is always electric and is definitely a must-do in the city! Even if football is not really your thing, make sure you check out the rooftop tours that they do where you get a real feel for the size and magnitude of the stadium as well as amazing views over the city.

Eldon Square

As well as nightlife, many would consider the shopping culture of Newcastle to be right up there with the country’s best. Eldon Square is situated right in the middle of the extremely accessible city centre and contains hundreds of well-known brands such as John Lewis, Apple and All Saints just to name a few. After a day full of shopping, make sure you stop off at the recently established Greys Quarter. Here you can choose from Mexican brunches in Chiquito to juicy burgers at the Handmade Burger Co. All of the best shopping and restaurant brands under one roof, what more could you want?!

Discovery Museum

The Discovery Museum is just one of many great museums in Newcastle but makes it on to this list due to its deep roots in the local culture. The most famous attraction is Turbinia, Charles Parsons’ steam powered ship. It was built on Tyneside and was the world’s first steam turbine-powered ship as well as at the time being the fastest ship in the world! Explore the rest of the museum to discover the region’s past and present importance in the world of science and technology.
